More than 200 Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers, friends and supporters gathered for the Indiana Child Advocate Network’s 3rd annual CASA Day at the Statehouse in Indianapolis on March 3, 2014. Guest speakers included Indiana Supreme Court Justice Loretta Rush and inspiring messages from two CASA volunteers and their CASA youths.

LaPorte County CASA Executive Director Karen Biernacki said the special day carries deep meaning. “Each year, more than 200 local victims of abuse and neglect enter the child welfare system. Unfortunately, that system, filled though it is with well-meaning individuals, is simply ill equipped to guarantee that these children’s best interest is the priority. That’s why CASA volunteers play such a vital role.”

The CASA volunteers gathered at the Indiana Government Center to meet with state representatives, who gave an overview of the legislative process and an update on legislation impacting the children CASA serves. Volunteers then marched to the Statehouse for a noon rally in the South Atrium of the Rotunda. CASA volunteers from both LaPorte and Pulaski counties met with State Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, discussing tough issues affecting the future of our local children in need.

“You can’t help but admire these volunteers,” said Biernacki. “They really are a formidable force fighting for our kids. And they’re not content just to stay at home. They’re going to spread the word until everyone knows what’s at stake.”

And just what’s at stake here at home?

“Over 74 local victims of child abuse and neglect in our county are still without an advocate,” said Lindsay Malik, CASA program director for LaPorte County. “We won’t rest until every single one of them has someone standing by their side to lift up their voice, and their life.”
