The intersection of Lincolnway and Boyd Boulevard, always busy because of Walmart and other businesses in that vicinity, has made the top spot once again as the most dangerous in LaPorte. But a close second is the intersection of Lincolnway and Tipton Street.
The LaPorte Police Department keeps track of the intersections with the most accidents. So far in 2014, here’s the tally:
– East Lincolnway/Boyd Boulevard with eight crashes
– Lincolnway/Tipton Street with seven crashes
– East Lincolnway/Frontage Road with four crashes
– Pine Lake Avenue/Waverly Road, I and Sixth streets, Lincolnway/Michigan Avenue, Lincolnway/Indiana Avenue, and Kingsbury Avenue/Monroe Street, with three crashes each
LaPorte Police investigated 188 property-damage and 29 personal-injury crashes in the first quarter of 2014; six of the crashes were alcohol related. During the same period in 2013, the department investigated 132 property-damage and 26 personal-injury crashes, seven of them alcohol related.
“We believe that the much more severe weather conditions experienced this year account for most of the increase in crashes,” the department reported in a press release.
LaPorte Police will conduct 40 hours of Operation Pull Over-funded seat belt patrols during April. The department will also conduct patrols to seek impaired drivers every weekend in April, organized through the LaPorte County DUI Taskforce.
