The alluring new surface of Kiwanis Field, boasting the classic “Flying L” at the 50-yard line and orange and black bleachers, drew a good crowd at the public event “Touch the Turf” Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014.

A sweet and poignant touch on the field: An orange hashmark at the 26-yard line in memory of No. 26 Slicer Jake West, who died last year at the field of an undetected heart condition.

On Friday, Aug. 15, the Slicers will break in the field with a scrimmage vs. Logansport starting at 6 p.m.

Fans gather to inspect the renovated field.

Layna Hannon, 6, a first grader at Kingsbury Elementary, is all smiles as she runs across the bright orange end zone.

The first slam dunk (that we know of) is made in the end zone.
