Aug. 18, 1914 – Lightning kills a farm hand and three horses near Wellsboro.

Aug. 18, 1964 – Communist-backed rebels in the eastern Congo killed at least four Europeans, including two United Nations officials.

Aug. 18, 1989 – A state official will try to move the date for widening Pine Lake Avenue from 1998 to 1993 or 1994.

Aug. 18, 2004 – Joan Hupp is retiring from “The Cookery” in downtown LaPorte. (It continues under new ownership.)
