Hard to believe, but we’re in the waning days of August and that means the end of this season’s Arts in the Park free concerts at Fox Park. Come out this week and enjoy the Power Train ensemble from First United Methodist Church on Wednesday, Aug. 27, and the ever-popular Tom Milo Big Band on Thursday, Aug. 28.

Both concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater. Each evening will include pre-concert music, artwork on display by local artists Karen Hart-Long, Dave Russell and Ken Baker; poetry; and refreshments available for purchase.

Wednesday: Power Train

Power Train has provided music for the First UMC contemporary service for 14 years. Members Larry Cook, Rafael Casper, Teri Dragos, Larry Dunbar, Greta Friedman, Sandy Gleim, Cathy Hofer, Matt & Pam Huff, Joann Liberatore, Steve McClatchey, and Peter & Mary Kay Steele welcome you to a comfortable, uplifting evening of music and good friends.

Thursday: Tom Milo Big Band

This perennial, LaPorte-based, swingin’ band performs songs ranging from the Glenn Miller tunes of the ’40s and classic Sinatra gems to contemporary hits. Each member has been a soloist in his/her own right, touring with such notables as Stan Kenton, Les Elgart and Duke Ellington.

The band includes two vocalists, five saxophones, three trombones, four trumpets, bass, guitar, piano, and drums. It has played throughout Chicagoland, northern Indiana and southwestern Michigan, as well as aboard cruises to the Caribbean, Alaska and the Panama Canal.

Arts in the Park concerts are brought to you free of charge thanks to the generosity of patrons, donors and underwriters. To contribute to next season’s concerts and for more information, call 362-2558 or email artsintheparklaporte@yahoo.com.
