Merry Moderns Homemaker Club met May 20, 2013, in the home of Lisa Tarnow. President Dee Dickman opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Homemakers’ Creed. Secretary Joyce Gillock called the roll of 15 members and one guest with the question, “What flowers did you plant in your garden?” The secretary’s report was read and Sharron Raven gave the treasurer’s report. Marilyn Sawyer gave the Sunshine report. Jo Ludwig gave the Health and Safety report on the new LaPorte business, Salon Cela, which has wigs for cancer patients.
The IEHA Home and Family Conference is June 12-14 at Purdue University. All donations for “Grandma’s Attic” at the fair are due by June 28; the LaPorte County Fair is July 7-13. The 100th anniversary picnic of the Indiana Extension Homemakers Association will be held Aug. 17 at Red Mill Park.
A donation was collected for the South Bend Ronald McDonald House for a family to spend a free night. Another night’s fee will be sent from the club treasury. Carol Alward told of items needed there in anticipation of a future visit there. A collection for Purdue Cancer Research Fund was also taken. The group also saves pop tabs and canceled stamps.
Lisa Tarnow gave the evening’s program on making laundry detergent instead of buying brand names.
Marge Dickson won the door award and Betty Morris and Joyce Gillock won attendance prizes.
