Traditionally, years with presidential elections draw the highest voter turnout. The irony of that: The actions of our local, state and congressional representatives have a greater impact on our daily lives and our communities than does the U.S. president. By all means, vote in presidential election years. But don’t overlook the importance of voting in the so-called “off years” — such as this one.
Up for election Nov. 4 will be candidates for this area’s U.S. representative; various state offices; county sheriff; several county commission, county judge and county council seats; several area school board seats; and numerous township positions.
The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 4 election is Monday, Oct. 6. Voter registration has never been easier. Do so online at http://www.indianavoters.com or register at the LaPorte or Michigan City courthouses’ Voter Registration Offices.
All citizens with a valid Indiana driver’s license or Indiana state-issued identification card are eligible to register.
