This one is worth revisiting. That stunning field aglow with sunflowers south of town caught the eyes of both of WNLP’s stellar photographers, Bob Wellinski and Mike Kellems. You saw Mike’s photo earlier; here are some more from Bob, who happened upon the field’s farmers during his visit and learned the useful reason why they grew these beauties.
Brighten up these rainy early autumn days as you enjoy these spectacular images.
“While I was there today (Oct. 5), a couple stopped by and happened to be the caretakers of the field,” Bob wrote. “A wet spring led to a late wheat harvest for Eggert Farms in their fields along CR-250S between CR-100W (A Street) and CR-150W (I Street). Because of the delay, their original plan of planting soybeans was out of the question because of the long growing season needed. So, sunflowers became Option 2 due to their shorter growing season.
“Once the 40 acres of sunflowers are ready for harvesting, they will be sent to Marion, IN, to be processed for biodiesel fuel. The recent cold, rainy and windy weather has taken a toll on the bright yellow flowers, but patience and a closer look at the flowers still reveal their beauty.”
Thanks to the Eggerts for providing this expanse of beauty to LaPorte County.
