“IRS” phone scammers targeting this area

LaPorte Police and other local departments are warning about an “IRS” phone scam targeting this area.

LaPorte Police report that numerous people have contacted the department in the past week regarding the scam.

The scammer alleges there is something wrong with the victim’s tax return and threatens to send a federal official to the person’s home within the hour.

Senior citizens seem to be the primary targets for these types of calls, in which the scammers try to scare victims into wiring them money. Some have even been followed up by a second scam call alleging that a grandchild or other relative has been arrested and is in need of bond money.

Do not fall victim to these criminals! Do not give out personal or bank information over the phone, and never agree to send money in any form. If you are in doubt about a caller’s legitimacy, contact your local law enforcement right away:

- LaPorte Police Department: (219) 362-9446

- LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office: (219) 326-7700

- Michigan City Police Department: (219) 874-3221
