A widespread Frontier phone problem silenced the emergency 911 system, the courthouse and hospital phone systems, and many businesses and offices throughout LaPorte County for the morning and part of the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014. Service was restored to some locations, including 911 and the hospital, in mid-afternoon.

Service was restored to the 911 center and courthouse at about 2:30 p.m. On Wednesday morning, this message was issued: “There is a massive phone disruption in our area that is affecting the 911 land lines … the 911 Center can receive cell phone calls. At least 18,000 customers including the Frontier Communication offices in our area are affected.”

IU Health LaPorte Hospital also reported that service was restored this afternoon. It had issued this message Wednesday morning: “Frontier phone carrier is experiencing technical difficulties that are affecting incoming and outgoing telephone calls to IU Health LaPorte Hospital and physician offices. We are informed that this is a county-wide issue, and that Frontier is working on resolving the problem.”

Some businesses were unable to make credit card transactions because of the outage.
