Everybody loves an “awwww” story, especially at this time of year. LaPorte Police issued this press release Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014:
“A LaPorte Police Officer saved a cat from certain drowning when he went above and beyond in rescuing it from a storm drain.
“On Monday, Dec. 8, at about 10:52 p.m., LaPorte Police responded to the intersection of Maple Ave./Monroe St. to investigate a cat that was stuck in a storm drain there. Police received two separate calls about the perilous situation, with one caller indicating that the cat may have been thrown into the drain.
“One of the callers remained with the cat and told police she was unable to reach it because of the drain cover. Officers removed the heavy cover and Specialist Vince Bowman climbed head-first into the drain. With his entire upper torso inside the drain and officers holding steadfast onto his duty belt to keep him from slipping in, he was able to reach the cat and save it from the rising waters.
“The witness offered to take the wet, scared cat home and care for it. After changing into a clean, dry uniform, Specialist Bowman stopped by the witness’s home to check on the cat, which was doing fine under the woman’s care.
“A wonderful example of some of the best in our community taking care of even the smallest of creation! Bravo!”
