Mrs. LaVeta P. Harris, 92, of LaPorte, died Jan. 12, 2015, at Brentwood Assisted Living, LaPorte.
She was born June 2, 1922, in Bloomington, IN, to Charles and Edna Mae (McDaniel) Brownfield (both deceased), was raised in Robinson, IL, and lived in LaPorte for 72 years.
LaVeta had attended First United Methodist Church, was member of Rose Rebekah Lodge 408, was active in the Senior Bowling League, served on the LaPorte School Board in 1961, and was an employee of Harvey’s dime store. She was also a softball pitcher in Women’s Fast Pitch Leagues.
On Dec. 14, 1940, in Henderson, KY, she married Ralph Harris. They were married until his death in 1993. They lived most of their lives on Park Street and Grand Avenue.
Surviving are two sons, George A. Harris (Bev) of Ft. Myers, FL, and Ralph DaWayne Harris (Susan) of Hampton, VA; three grandchildren; and Boyd Carter of LaPorte, a longtime family friend and companion to LaVeta after Ralph’s passing.
The family wishes to give its utmost appreciation to the staff at Brentwood Assisted Living and Memory Care and to Asera Hospice Care for the loving care they provided to LaVeta.
LaVeta will be placed next to Ralph in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, at a later date. Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.
