(Jan. 14, 2015) — The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is arranging a happy reunion of an alumnus of New Prairie High School’s Class of 1974 and her class ring.

Sheriff’s Detective Mike Raymer, who maintains the evidence room, has been updating files and cases. While reorganizing the room he found a box containing costume jewelry as well as the New Prairie ring, all among recovered stolen items that had never been claimed by an owner.

The name inscribed inside the ring was Diane Mills, and Raymer learned her date of birth from the school. He used a law enforcement tool known as TLO to determine her married name of DeMeyer and her current residents in northeast LaPorte County.

Once contacted, Diane told the sheriff’s office that she believes the ring was taken when her parents’ home was burglarized more than a dozen years ago.

Raymer plans to return the ring to DeMeyer later this week.
