Former LaPorte city councilman Timothy Stabosz is running for an at-large seat on the council in the May 5 Republican primary.
Stabosz, a lifelong Republican, served as a council member from 2004-07.
A full-time investor, Stabosz, 46, graduated from DePaul University in Chicago with a B.S. in accounting; his first job was working for the federal government auditing credit unions. He was featured on the Dec. 26, 2014, broadcast of NPR’s “This American Life,” during which he talked about his longtime fight to reduce the $1.5 million salary of the CEO of a company in which he held shares.
“I believe my education, background as a former financial institution examiner, and background as a professional (and sometimes activist) investor for most of my adult life, make me an ideal candidate to serve on the city council,” Stabosz said in a press release. “Make no mistake, the most important role council members fulfill is to approve the roughly $10 million annual city budget. It is absolutely critical that that elected body contain members with a background in business, finance, accounting and financial management. I read and analyze financial statements constantly in my work, and I possess a keen and exhaustive attention to detail. I would be honored and grateful for the chance to put my knowledge and skills to work in the service of a city, and its citizens, who I love very much.”
Stabosz is currently a member of the LaPorte Historic Preservation Commission, and is an officer of People Engaged in Preservation. He was most recently involved in the effort to preserve the dairy barn on the LaPorte County Home property. He also has a passionate interest in city planning and quality of life initiatives, aware of the critical role they play in fostering long term economic development.
“LaPorte is an incredibly distinctive, charming and special place, and we need to do better in setting a vision of economic development for our future that leverages the assets we already have and enhances the desirability and sense of place of the community, rather than doing what everyone else is doing. If elected to the council, I intend to do just that.”
