Historical evidence suggests that the former Pulaski King estate was among La Porte County sites along the Underground Railroad. (Illustration provided)
Last year it drew standing room only and required a repeat performance on the same day. This year, come and grab your seat early as La Porte County Historian Fern Eddy Schultz again presents her
fascinating program on this area’s role in the Underground Railroad. The program will take place at the La Porte County Historical Society Museum on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m.
Fern’s presentation, honoring Black History Month, will be illustrated with photographs, sketches and maps of local sites believed to have been a part of the operation to assist slaves to reach safe havens in free states and Canada. There is evidence of two major routes through La Porte County, with “conductors” providing assistance at various “stations” along the way. Information will also be given about some of the earliest black residents of La Porte County.
The museum is located at 2405 Indiana Ave., La Porte, and is handicapped accessible. There is no charge for the program but regular museum admission fees of just a few dollars will apply. The program will be presented weather-permitting; please call first if the weather is questionable — (219) 324-6767.
