The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance with an odiferous littering problem in the Galena and Springfield township areas. About seven months ago, deputies began noticing an increasing amount of white plastic bags being dumped along roads in the two townships. The bags were found to contain soiled diapers. They have been found along CR 125 E, CR 800 N, CR 900 N, Fail Road, and CR 1000 N.

On March 25, 2015, the Community Work Program (CWP) crew from the LaPorte County Jail began a cleanup of the trash left behind during a long winter. CWP consists of low-risk inmates who perform various work projects around the county. They are supervised by Sheriff’s Cpl. Bobby Blair.

LaPorte County Sheriff John Boyd visited with Blair and the CWP crew during the cleanup. “It’s sad that in the short time they’ve been working, the truck is already full of extra large bags holding all of this trash,” Boyd said. “We have such a beautiful county and it’s absolutely criminal that someone would continue to dump their trash along our roads.

“I have asked our patrol units to step up their presence in the affected area and we are also asking for citizens’ assistance. If you have any knowledge of who may be contributing to this littering problem or if you witness trash being dumped, please contact our office. Calling 911 would be appropriate

if you witness trash being dumped.” In addition to the unsightly littering, the diapers also pose a public health issue.

Boyd praised Blair and the cleanup crew. “Cpl. Blair has been a valued member of our department for more than 20 years and not only does a great job of supervising the CWP crew, he can often be found working right alongside of them. We are very proud of him.”
