The City of LaPorte has earned a nice chunk of change — $50,000 — for being named one of 50 quarterfinalists among 138 applicants in 347 U.S. communities in the America’s Best Communities Prize Competition.
The America’s Best Communities (ABC) competition, sponsored by Frontier Communications, DISH Network, the Weather Channel and CoBank, dedicates $10 million in cash and other rewards to support and inspire communities to achieve long-term growth. The competition is all about encouraging collaboration and cooperation among individuals and organizations that share the same goal: to increase economic development and create positive change within their communities.
As a quarterfinalist, the City of LaPorte will be awarded $50,000 to develop a community revitalization plan focused on economic development. In the city’s application, the goal for economic development focuses on implementing complete streets in key locations throughout the city — upgrading roads, sidewalks and cycle facilities, and installing infrastructure such as optical fiber for high-speed data.
“The City of LaPorte is thrilled to be recognized and rewarded in this competition as one of America’s Best Communities,” Mayor Blair Milo said in a press release, adding that the initiative will help LaPorte’s need to “invest in the quality of our roads and sidewalks; the need to enhance safety, health and quality of life for our residents amongst our transportation corridors; the opportunity to broaden our non-motorized transportation routes; and the constant drive to expand opportunities for existing and future local businesses.”
The city’s community revitalization plan will be developed over the next 6 months and will guide the use of potential ABC prize winnings ranging from $100,000 to $3 million to be awarded in later rounds.
