The League of Women Voters of LaPorte County will present special guest Krista Grimm, from the LWV Stormwater Education Project, at Lunch with the League on Tuesday, May 12, from noon to 1 p.m. at Mama Rosa’s, 402 W. U.S. 20, Michigan City. Participants may select and pay for their own orders, while enjoying this free public program.
Krista has spent the last two years researching and educating communities about stormwater, and in fact will spend the morning at Krueger Middle School doing just that. Excessive stormwater becomes problematic when homes are flooded. Less visibly, it carries pollutants to streams, rivers and Lake Michigan, causing beach closures, erosion and disrupting ecosystems.
Green infrastructure solutions can supplement sewer systems to help prevent flooding, at the same time improving the environment and beautifying neighborhoods. Individual homeowners may employ green practices at their homes.
Whether your concern is how to create a rain garden or use a rain barrel, what to do about flooding in streets and parking lots, or what principles guide the building of infrastructure in flood-prone areas, Grimm has the resources.
Contact the LWV at LWVLaPorte@gmail.com for more information.
