Slicer JV dominates, 11-1, over Merrillville

The Slicer JV baseball team mercy-ruled the Merrillville Pirates at Clarke Park on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, winning 11-1 in 5 innings.

Andy Samuelson was the winning pitcher, allowing an unearned run with 5 strikeouts, 1 walk and 3 hits in 4 innings pitched. Mark Haines pitched a shutout inning in relief with a strikeout.

Leading 4-1 in the bottom of the 3rd, the Slicers scored 2 runs on no hits as the Merrillville pitcher hit 4 batters in the inning. The Slicers ended the game in the 5th by stroking 5 straight hits to begin the inning. Samuelson ripped a double to right field to plate 2 runners, and Chandler Banic ended the game with a sharp single to right to score Samuelson with the winning run. Austin Botsford had a hit and a walk and scored 2 runs before leaving the game with an injured wrist in the 3rd inning. His replacement, Bishop Yagoda, singled in the 5th to keep the rally going.

Banic (2 hits, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI), Nolan Lorenz (2 hits, 3 runs scored, 1 RBI), Jacob Young (1 hit, 2 RBI), Will Malekovic (1 hit, 2 RBI, 1 run scored), and Thomas Pope (1 hit, 1 RBI) led the offense.

The team record is now 14-5, 5-4 DAC.

The next game is against Michigan City at Clarke Park in LaPorte on Friday, May 8, at 4:30.
