Experience history in motion this Memorial Day weekend as Hesston Steam Museum opens for the season. The museum, nestled on beautiful grounds in northern LaPorte County, offers rides on steam-powered trains, working vintage machines and food provided by a notable local restaurant.
Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., but come early for breakfast at 8 a.m. Trains start running at noon.
Climb aboard any or all of three steam-powered railroads for a scenic ride over bridges, through scenic woods and past lakes and farm fields. Historic steam locomotives will take you back to a byegone era. A steam saw mill and electric light plant are also in operation to entertain and enlighten your family.
Enjoy breakfast, lunch and ice cream at Doc’s, featuring farm-fresh food crafted by the artisans from Spire restaurant in LaPorte. While the museum campus officially opens at 11:30, Doc’s Soda Fountain serves breakfast from 8 to 11:30. Picnickers are welcome to enjoy the grounds. And visit The Depot Store to shop for shirts, “Thomas the Tank Engine” toys and more.
