Terra Verde members met at Barb Edmond’s home on May 12, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. Dianne Burgis was her co-hostess. Roll call, minutes and a treasurer’s report were given.
Sacha Gee Burns was introduced by Vice President Ann McDermott. This is Sacha’s third year working on the Community Gardens, which is owned by the City of LaPorte and located on the corner of Jackson and Jefferson. It is a great location because of its close proximity to Lincoln Elementary School and the downtown area. Her talk was entertaining, enthusiastic and enlightening!
Pat Frankinburger suggested the 158-acre Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids for a day trip. She also suggested Wellfield Botanic Gardens in Elkhart, to which the club contributes.
The 84th State Convention of The Garden Club of Indiana, held in New Harmony, was attended by Sue Cummings, Pauline McCoy, Barb Edmonds and Fran Raderstorf.
Terra Verde members are continuing to look for recyclable articles to put into the gift basket to be taken to the State Conservation Meeting on Sept. 15 in Rochester.
Dianne Burgis gave an informative horticulture report on bamboo, the Asian Crazy Worm and Shrinking Violets.
Kathy Staninger, Sue Cummings and Anne Thode participated in the LaPorte County Solid Waste District’s Clean It Up Day held May 2, collecting 6 bags of trash. Pauline McCoy, Dianne Burgis and Fran Raderstorf worked with Carey Garwood and other volunteers at Bethany Church’s LaPark doing a spring cleanup, digging and trimming.
Upcoming events include the annual garage sale at Jongkind Park on Saturday, May 16, where the club will be selling plants. Proceeds will be donated for scholarships to horticulture students attending Indiana colleges. Also, the Kesling Park A Street entryway garden spring cleanup is May 21 at 8 a.m.
