Five people were injured, with three airlifted from the scene, in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday morning, June 9, 2015, on U.S. 421 near Westville.
According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at about 5:30 a.m. on 421 near Alida Road. A maroon Ford Expedition was traveling north on 421, driven by Patrick Michaels, 44, of Wanatah. A maroon GMC Sierra driven by Vincent Fischer, 43, of Valparaiso, was traveling south on 421. Also in the GMC were Logan Fischer, 40, Cheyenne Fischer, 17, and Duncan Fischer, 10, all of Valparaiso.
Vincent, Logan and Duncan Fischer were the most critically injured and were flown from the scene by two medical helicopters. The other two victims were transported to hospitals via ambulance. All were still hospitalized as of June 10.
Police say there is nothing to indicate alcohol or drugs being a factor in this crash.
Investigators say the southbound vehicle driven by Fischer traveled left of the centerline and into the northbound lanes of 421. Investigators are interested in talking with the driver of a northbound vehicle, possibly a Dodge Neon, that was reportedly just ahead of the Ford Expedition prior to the crash. They hope to interview that person and obtain a witness statement. Anyone who was in the area at the time is asked to call Detective Scott Boswell at 219.326.7700 extension 2443.
