Michigan City Police report that a black bear was spotted June 15, 2015, in Michigan City in the area of U.S. 20 and Meer Road.
The bear is believed to be the same one spotted a few days ago near South Bend.
“Experts say if you see a bear, make a lot of noise. Slowly back away, but make yourself look big and yell. If you’re walking through the woods, carry a bell or something else to make noise,” the MCPD advised.
“A lot of bears are actually scared of people, the DNR says. As a precaution, people with a bear in the area should get bird feeders, grills and trash cans out of their yards.”
The Indiana DNR encourages citizens to report sightings of the bear to dfwinput@dnr.IN.gov or by calling (812) 334-1137 during regular business hours.
