Here’s something you don’t see every day in LaPorte. Shari Presnell sent WNLP this amazing shot: “Look what I found driving by Clear Lake on Friday afternoon (June 26, 2015) — 14 pelicans! It was an awesome sight.”
Brad Bumgardner of Indiana Dunes State Park told WNLP: “American White Pelicans are an uncommon but annual migrant through Indiana in the spring and fall. Having summer records in Indiana is indeed rare. No known breeding has occurred, but we have also received photos of the LaPorte birds. The western population that moves through the central U.S. appears to be expanding, which also explains the increase in sightings in Indiana.”
Lesson learned: Keep your eyes to the skies, and the lakes. And always appreciate and respect the richness of our fascinating natural surroundings here.
