A Kingsford Heights couple was formally charged in LaPorte Circuit Court June 30, 2015, in connection with the methamphetamine lab found in a Kingsford Heights home with six children present on June 26.
Ronald and Tammy Walters, both 37, are charged with:
— Dealing Methamphetamine (includes the manufacturing of the drug by state statute), Level 4 Felony, with the enhancing circumstances of being within 500 feet of a public park and an additional enhancing circumstance of children being present at the time of the manufacture of meth.
— Possession of Precursors, Level 5 Felony, enhancing circumstances of being within 500 feet of a public park and with children present at the location of the manufacture.
— Neglect of a Dependent (two counts), Level 5 Felony, with the enhancing circumstances of manufacturing/dealing meth.
Both are being held in LaPorte County Jail on $20,000 bond. They were scheduled to appear in court July 1.
The sheriff’s office received a call early June 26 regarding a possible meth lab in a house at 389 Evanston Rd. They discovered the lab; several children were also in the house. The Indiana Department of Child Services was called and the children were examined at IU Health LaPorte Hospital. They were reportedly OK.
LaPorte County Metro Narcotics Unit conducted the investigation. Also responding in the case besides the Metro unit and DCS were sheriff’s deputies, LaPorte County EMS, Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Team, Kingsford Heights Marshal’s Office, and Kingsford Union Fire Department.
“It is disheartening to see minor children being in the presence of such a dangerous and volatile narcotic,” Sheriff John Boyd said in a press release. “I commend the patrol deputies for their response to the original call and our narcotics detectives for the in-depth investigation that has led to these charges. The sheriff’s office will continue to diligently pursue drug dealers; this case is an example of that and the results that will follow. We encourage anyone with information to be forthcoming and contact our investigators.”
