As of Jan. 1, 2017, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, LaPorte and Michigan City police departments and Indiana State Police will combine efforts to fight drugs with the new LaPorte County Drug Task Force. The force will be part of the Indiana High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA).
After a nearly two-year application process, all four police agencies, along with the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office, were accepted into the HIDTA organization, which will add more resources and funding to combat drug dealing.
The new unit will be comprised of 10 highly motivated investigators from all four police agencies, along with an agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and will be commanded by Sgt. Andy Hynek of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.
“I am excited to have been tasked with leading and working with such a great group of individuals who are all committed to stopping the illegal sale of drugs in our community, and I value the partnership that our unit will share with members of our community to collectively clean up our streets,” Hynek said in a press release.
