Jan. 4, 1917 — The head of a murdered woman with her distorted features was placed in evidence at a trial in New Hampshire. It was suggested that all women leave the court room, but eight remained.

Jan. 4, 1967 — Dwight Smoker, president of the LaPorte County Fair Board, receives a grand prize because the 1966 fair was named tops in Indiana.

Jan. 4, 1992 — Ames Department Store in the Pine Lake Shopping Center is still operating, but how much longer remains a mystery.

Jan. 4, 2007 — A decades-long effort ends as the city finally acquires land critical to the development of NewPorte Landing through eminent domain.
