Just to make July 4 in downtown LaPorte a little more interesting, a fire broke out inside LaPorte County Jail shortly before 1 p.m.
One inmate, Marzano R. Shelly, 35, of Michigan City, was taken to IU Health LaPorte Hospital with smoke inhalation, according to a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office press release. Jail employees were alerted to the fire in a cell on the south side of the jail. Deputies were able to remove Shelly from the cell and extinguish the fire.
Shelly was awaiting trial in LaPorte County Superior Court I for murder, robbery, possession of a firearm by a violent felon, and battery by bodily waste.
Inmates in that cell block area were quickly relocated to another secure area and the LaPorte Fire Department ventilated the building.
No one else was injured.
