LaPorte Lions met Aug. 5, 2013, at Western Inn. Boss Lion Doug Buell welcomed members and asked Ralph E. Howes to lead “God Bless America” and the Pledge of Allegiance. Sandra Provan offered prayer. Buell gave attendance pins to Ralph E. Howes (27 years) and George Royster (5 years). He reminded members of Dist. Gov. Connie Roe’s banner night Sept. 7 in Star City, IN, $15 per person; and said Read LaPorte County is inviting teams to participate in a Scrabble tournament Sept. 26.

Rita Mrozinski introduced Maggi Spartz, president of the Unity Foundation, who updated members on the property off Pine Lake Avenue the foundation is making into a park; LaPorte Lions previously gave $5,000 to fund planning for the area.

Buell said he met with Maple City and Door Village Lions to coordinate Candy Days. They agreed to work Sept. 27 and 28 with Door Village Lions at the post office both days, and Maple City and LaPorte Lions will work Kroger and Al’s East on alternate days.

A $250 check from Maple City Lions has been received, their share of the cost of the Lions sign at Scharf Field. Lions International sent a 30-year membership pin for Mark Essling and a thank you was received from Leader Dogs for the Blind for the club’s donation.

The club will need a new meeting location after Aug. 31 when Western Inn will close. Buell and Lion Ken Schnable will talk to possible location owners before the board meeting Aug. 12.

Tailtwister Schnable netted $17.
