Mrs. Mildred B. Garwood, 88, of LaPorte, died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at Brentwood Assisted Living in LaPorte.
She was born Jan. 14, 1925, in Knox, IN, to Orville C. and Anna (Price) Bricker.
Mildred worked at Allis-Chalmers, LaPorte, during the war years after graduating high school, where she would meet her future husband. After marriage and starting a family she returned to work as secretary to the principal at Maple Elementary School in LaPorte and then as office assistant at the Media Center for LaPorte Community School Corporation. She retired in 1987 after over 20 years of service. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and its Altar Guild, Order of the Eastern Star, Phi Delta Kappa Wives and Psi Iota Xi, and the LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary. Mildred was a very active, fun-loving and energetic person in our community. She enjoyed travel, gardening, cooking and sports, and loved to attend most any social activity with family and friends. Mildred was a deeply devoted and loving mother and friend to those whose lives she touched in her kind and gentle way.
On Sept. 17, 1950, in LaPorte, she married Clarence M. Garwood, who preceded her in death Dec. 11, 2007.
Mildred was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John Bricker.
She is survived by her three children: sons, Gerald (Jan) Garwood of LaPorte and Dale (Lori) Garwood of Granger, IN, and daughter, Patricia (Don) Laskowski of LaPorte; four grandchildren, Joseph Garwood, Ashlee Garwood, Emily Garwood and Jacob Garwood; and four great-grandchildren, Alexis Garwood, Abbigail Garwood, Amira Garwood and Joey Garwood.
The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m., and on Friday, Sept. 6, at Bethany Lutheran Church, LaPorte, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A life celebration will be held at the church on Friday at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dennis Meyer officiating. Interment will follow at Carmel Cemetery, LaPorte.
