LaPorte County Highway Department employee Harlan Wiltfong uses a backhoe in these photos to pile sand/salt mixture in the county’s storage barn for the upcoming winter season.
The storage barn, located near the highway department building off Zigler Road in LaPorte, holds up to 15,000 tons of material when filled to the rafters.
During a normal winter, the county will use the entire supply. Recent winter have been somewhat mild and just a little over half was used.
The winter abrasive is mixed 3 parts sand to 1 part salt for the majority of the roads, while heavily traveled roads, such as Johnson Road, receive a 1:1 ratio.
