Photographer Bob Wellinski, who recently left the LaPorte Herald-Argus after more than three decades and now takes occasional shots for WNLP, collected three Hoosier State Press Association Awards Dec. 7, 2013, in Indianapolis.
Bob, who has won many awards over the years for his photos, collected this time for three H-A shots:
– First place for best spot news photo. The shot showed LaPorte City and Kankakee volunteer firefighters and LaPorte County EMS extricating a driver from a car after it collided with a New Prairie school bus on Fail Road in August 2012. Besides the driver of the car, a couple of students on the bus received minor injuries.
– First place for best general news photo. The bittersweet shot shows LaPorte County Sheriff K9 Officer Andrew Morse receiving a hug from fellow K9 officer Harlan Williams following the funeral for Morse’s K9 partner, Mirza, on Feb. 9, 2013. Mirza, 11, was euthanized due to a sudden illness.
– Third place for best sports action photo. This shot captured LaPorte girls basketball player Yojaira Campos battling with two Merrillville players for a loose ball on Jan. 11, 2013.

This award-winning Wellinski photo, published in the Herald-Argus and other Associated Press newspapers, shows LaPorte County K9 officer Andrew Morse (back to camera) receiving a hug from fellow K9 officer Harlan Williams following a funeral service for Morse’s K9 partner, Mirza, on Feb. 9, 2013. Mirza died after suffering an illness.
