Isabell June Stassen, 90, of LaPorte, died Jan. 7, 2014, at Golden Living Center Fountainview, LaPorte.
She was born in LaPorte on May 26, 1923, to Gerhart and Hannah (Pohl) Stassen.
in 1927 Isabell moved to LaPorte with her family and became a lifelong resident. She graduated from LaPorte High School in 1941. Isabell attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and Taylor University. She worked many different types of jobs at many places, including Kellings Shoe Store, Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing, Whirlpool Corporation, The Bendix Corporation in South Bend, LaPorte Herald-Argus, LaPorte Hospital, Yacht Club, Modine Manufacturing, and Westville Correctional Center. She was a charter member of Baptist Missionary Church and served as organist and soloist there from 1948-1996. She had served as president, vice president, secretary and tour director of the LaPorte Camera and Travel Club, and as class historian for the LaPorte High School Class of 1941. She sang in the LaPorte Symphony Choral Group, mentored in Prison Fellowship, volunteered at Fountainview Terrace, and taught Bible study classes and groups. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she also served as organist and pianist.
Isabell is survived by her brother, Laverne A. Stassen of Louisville, KY, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Elmer Stassen, Mayburn Stassen and Raymond Stassen; and her sisters, Adeline Gruner and Beulah Crowley.
Visitation will be held at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, LaPorte, on Wednesday, Jan. 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Kim Landrum officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, LaCrosse, IN.
