The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 7:15 a.m., breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m., and the program will begin at 8 a.m. Reservations are not required.

The featured speaker will be Tony Walker, who will talk about King’s life and legacy. Walker is managing attorney of The Walker Law Group, which represents churches, schools and government agencies with offices in Michigan City, Gary, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Debra Whitlow, a Michigan City High School honor student and member of the City Singers Choral Group, will sing following Walker’s speech. Troy Patterson Thomas, of Gary, will recite Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to local food pantries in Michigan City and LaPorte.

PNC students, faculty, staff and community members are then invited to join one of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service Projects taking place throughout the area. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, several PNC education professors and students will travel to the Michigan City Public Library to lead a series of activities for children.

All children are welcome to attend, but activities are intended for individuals ages 2 to 12. Hands-on activities will focus on King’s life.
