Jan. 18, 1914 – Five thousand men walk out in a strike against the railroad in New York. Three hundred are killed and traffic is at a standstill.

Jan. 18, 1964 – A diplomatic break between the United States and Panama goes into effect, and U.S. officials see no immediate way to heal it.

Jan. 18, 1989 – U.S.-Soviet nuclear talks are deadlocked.

Jan. 18, 2004 – LaPorte County Commissioner William Hager announces his intent to seek a second term.
