Don’t panic: Special siren test to be held Thursday, June 20

$

This Thursday, June 20, is supposed to be sunny and clear. So when you hear the emergency sirens at 11 a.m., don’t worry — it’s a special test.

The LaPorte County Emergency Management Agency is testing the sirens on Thursday just to be sure they’re in working order during this severe weather season.

During the test (normally conducted every first Saturday of the month), two one-minute signals will sound, with one minute of silence between signals.

During actual emergencies, a three-minute signal is sounded, with a short period of silence between signals, repeated one or more times.

In the event of a real emergency, first seek shelter, then listen to radio stations WLOI AM-1540/WCOE FM 96.7 or WEFM 95.9 for instructions, and/or tune in to South Bend and Chicago TV stations as well as local cable channel 97.

Residents should designate a safe room in their homes and have a transistor radio, fresh batteries and other emergency supplies on hand.

An all-clear siren is not sounded during emergencies.

During emergencies, do not call 911 or local police or fire to obtain information; these lines must be kept clear for actual emergencies.

Presbyterian Church’s Bible school June 23-27 features family fun, mission project

A summer family event, “Athens: Paul’s Dangerous Journey to Share the Truth,” will be hosted at The Presbyterian Church of LaPorte from June 23-27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. each day. A worldwide mission project will be a new feature in this year’s vacation Bible school.

Rev. Sally Wicks

Rev. Sally Wicks

Families step back in time at Athens, exploring some of the adventures the apostle Paul faced. Kids and adults participate in a memorable Bible-times marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bible-times snacks, visit Paul, and collect Bible Memory Makers to remind them of God’s Word.

Everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes at Celebration — a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved.

“I like this part, because it allows children to slow down and interact with caring adults in a way that is family-like,” said Rev. Sally Wicks. “It’s not glitzy and based on everything being fast. This allows children to create and think and have real conversations.”

Ricci Emmons, interim director of ministries to children and youth, said the five days’ activities are based on Acts 15-18, Paul’s second missionary journey to Athens.

“The children will sing songs, dance around, and be in small groups for ‘oikos’ — Greek for ‘household’ — to interact with other kids and talk about ancient times. They’ll share their ‘God sightings’ — how they’ve seen God that day. They’ll also make a big frieze, an ornamental piece, where they’ll write their experiences. And costumes — there’ll be costumes galore.”

“Children naturally pretend, and I like the way this allows them to do that,” said Wicks. “They can pretend to be part of the early Christian church and to know about one of the great apostles.”

Kids will play arena games and train for the Olympics. Each day they can visit marketplace shops such as the pottery studio and will make musical instruments and toys. A food market will provide snacks and the church’s Praise Band will play every day.

A special project this year: Kids and adults at Athens vacation Bible school will join nearly a million participants reaching out to needy kids through a hands-on mission project called Operation Kid-to-Kid, in which families will send photos and personalized Bible coloring books to children in India.

The church is located at 307 Kingsbury Ave. For more information and to register, call 362-6219. To register online, click on the following link:

The LaPorte Jaycees’ Fourth of July Parade is just weeks away, and some parade celebrities have been announced: two special little girls and eight great, big, beautiful horses.

LaPorte ambassadors Jaidyn and Neilah Maule will be among parade dignitaries, Mayor Blair Milo announced. And the famous Budweiser Clydesdales will draw their familiar red wagon down the route.

As for the flyover, it’s in jeopardy this year because of federal cutbacks. But the Jaycees have indicated that they’re working on other avenues for some kind of alternative.

South Shore service still limited after garbage truck gets wedged under Hudson Lake overpass

South Shore rail service was disrupted Thursday morning, June 20, 2013, for an unusual reason: a garbage truck wedged under an overpass in Hudson Lake.

At around 8 a.m., the truck’s driver tried to travel under the overpass at Point Road/Lake Park Avenue. But the truck was too tall to clear the 11-foot, 8-inch height, according to a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office press release. The driver sustained minor injuries to his face, but the tracks and bridge were damaged by the impact.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD) was busing passengers from South Bend and Hudson Lake to Michigan City as rail service east of Michigan City was halted. As of Thursday night, the rail service between South Bend and Michigan City was still unavailable and passengers were still being bused. That would be the case “until further notice,” according to the NICTD website.

For updates on train service, visit www.nictd.com.
