Patricia Ann Mulligan, 80, passed away Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, in Sandwich, IL, after suffering with dementia.

She was born Oct. 8, 1938, in LaPorte, IN, to Stephen and Lorraine (Kuta) Piasecki. She was raised in LaPorte and graduated from LPHS in 1956. She married John C. Mulligan on Aug. 9, 1958, and then moved to Rock Island, IL. It was there that her two children were born. John’s job moved them to Rockford in the early 1960s and then to rural Sugar Grove, IL. Patricia lived in several communities in the Fox Valley area for the next 40 years.

Patricia was born a rebel in her time. She was driven to work outside the home and be a part of the larger community. She started as Youth Director of the YWCA in Rockford and then in Aurora, IL. She worked together with the YMCA, in the late 1960s and early 1970s to create outreach programs such as the popular summer van program. She later worked for Waubonsee Community College as Director of Community Education. Pat was a pioneer in organizing and working to create social programs in the Aurora area, including Mutual Ground, Area Agency on Aging and many others.

In her later years, Pat fulfilled her dreams of having her house in the woods near Grand Junction, MI, and living as an artist. She had used her graphic arts skills all through her life but found ways of making money selling her fanciful paper dolls, greeting cards and painting murals.

She is survived by her children, Victoria Mulligan of Imperial Beach, CA, and Paul (Dawn) Mulligan of Yorkville, IL; her grandchildren, Terra McConnell, Kyle (Diana) and Alex (Katie) Mulligan; two great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Jason McConnell; her sisters, Rita Clem and Rosalie (Bob) Weisser; and nieces and nephew, Debi, Stephanie and Greg Weisser.

Patricia was preceded in death by her parents, Stephen and Lorraine Piasecki; her former husband, John Charles Mulligan; and her brother-in-law, Allan Clem.

Memorials may be directed to Mutual Ground, 418 Oak Ave., Aurora, IL 60506.

A Celebration of Patricia’s Life will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte.

Vintage military convoy turns heads as it travels through LaPorte

WNLP story and photos by Mike Kellems

What may have appeared to be a military invasion on the Maple City early Monday morning, Aug. 19, 2019, was actually a convoy of antique and modern military vehicles. Members of The Military Vehicle Preservation Association, as they make their transcontinental trek from Washington, D.C., to San Francisco, stopped at the fairgrounds in LaPorte. The group of 50-plus vehicles, following the Lincoln Highway, started early Monday in South Bend and were hosted by the LaPorte County Agricultural Association for their first break of the day at the fairgrounds, arriving at about 7:30 a.m. The convoy stayed at the fairgrounds for about an hour before heading west along Ind. 2 and its next stop on the far west side of the Hoosier state.

This is the 100th anniversary of the same route led by Lt. Colonel Dwight Eisenhower in 1919. The purpose of the original trip was to see how well the military could move across the country should the U.S. ever be attacked. In an interesting historical footnote, one of Eisenhower’s major accomplishments after becoming president was creation of the interstate highway system.

Among the many LaPorteans who came to see the vehicles were Ronald William Crane and his wife, Donna. Ronald served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and saw action in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters while serving as Quartermaster aboard the USS Larson. Ronald, who is 91 years young, confided to this WNLP reporter that he lied about his age and was actually 16 when he volunteered to go to war. He and his wife, who served as a teacher in LaPorte for 34 years, offered that they truly appreciated the opportunity to see so many historical vehicles. Yet another interesting fact that came from my brief time speaking with the couple: Ronald remembers meeting and talking with his great-grandfather Oren Crane, who served in the U.S. Army during the Civil War! It isn’t very often that we get the opportunity to spend time with a veteran of World War II who is also a descendant of a Civil War veteran. On behalf of the entire WNLP staff, we salute Ronald Crane for his dedication to duty and our country!

Photos above and below: The convoy consisted of a variety of vehicles from small, vintage Jeeps to large military trucks with their own self-contained living quarters. One ambulance looked right out of MASH, and a shiny Naval officer’s car was proudly shown off by its owner. Tributes to specific military veterans were attached to the sides of several cars.

On Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2019, the Healthcare Foundation of LaPorte (HFL) broke ground on a new facility in LaPorte, IN. The structure will become HFL’s new headquarters and will house a conference & learning center. The new building will be located 1.7 miles southeast of the current HFL office and will serve as a great resource for the foundation and surrounding community.

The center will be 12,815 square feet and will be completely accessible. HFL is utilizing the expertise of the architects at Shive Hattery and the team at Larson-Danielson Construction to conceptualize and bring their vision into fruition. The site, nestled in a tranquil location surrounded by nature and located just south of Fishtrap Lake, will be constructed using natural materials that will complement the land. There is even a previously established hiking trail, the Chessie Trial, alongside the site, and HFL will add a water/rest stop for trail participants to use.

The Healthcare Foundation of LaPorte stated it sees potential for the Chessie Trail to improve the health and quality of life of the community. Its grant to the project of $232,020 provided the 20 percent match for the federal grant LaPorte City received.

The primary function of this center will be to host many educational opportunities for not for profits sponsored by HFL, such as the Not for Profit Leadership Academy, Board Governance Academy, and other speakers and seminars. It will be a productive space to meet, learn, retreat and plan, offered free of charge to nonprofit organizations that engage in charitable activities benefiting the residents of LaPorte County and other public entities. It also holds the potential to host health and wellness seminars and speakers.

The building will feature a large conference room that can be split into 3 smaller rooms and will be capable of seating 10 to 223 people. This will offer a variety of room configurations and each room will include state-of-the-art audio/visual equipment, wi-fi and conference telephones. There will also be a large warming kitchen located close to the conference room(s) that will serve as a convenience for events that will host a hot meal.

An Incubator Space will also be available within the building. This space will be a dedicated area for nonprofits to work and collaborate with their mentors, designers, accountants and other industry experts. It will ideally be a space for young nonprofits to remove barriers and should help ease them into the  often costly process of establishing administrative and financial systems.

“HFL’s evolution is logical as money alone cannot change a community. A significant part of the plan relies on the development and enhancement of deeper partnerships with and across organizations and our community,” said Maria Fruth, President & CEO of HFL. When asked about the foundation’s strategic roadmap, Fruth added, “It is only by working together toward common goals that we will successfully reach our vision – to be among Indiana’s top 10 healthiest communities by 2030.”

The Healthcare Foundation of LaPorte is a not-for-profit, independent, private foundation dedicated to promoting health and wellness for the residents in and around LaPorte. This foundation was initially funded in March 2016 from the proceeds of the sale of LaPorte Hospital. With their shared vision, the LaPorte Hospital Foundation and the Healthcare Foundation of LaPorte blended their financial and operational efforts together as of Jan. 1, 2017.

LaPorte County Commission President Dr. Vidya Kora is pictured at a White House conference on Aug. 20, 2019, held for county commissioners from a four-state region including Indiana. Kora is seen here raising concerns with White House officials about ransomware attacks on local government entities such as the one that LaPorte County sustained in early July, when hostile foreign actors using the RYUK virus to hold county government computers hostage. Kora made the case that federal and state officials need to devote far more resources to prevention, detection and prosecution of ransomware attackers, saying such attacks have become “epidemic” across the country and deserve a unified, robust response from state and federal government.
