The Susan Hay Hemminger Scholarship Foundation makes tuition awards to LaPorte County residents who graduate from local high schools and pursue a two- or four-year degree on a full-time basis at an accredited institution. Since 1995, the foundation has made 298 awards totaling $783,600 to 189 individuals. Awards are made at a public ceremony.
The 2014 awards event, the 20th since the foundation began its awards, will be held Wednesday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 2 of the Library-Student-Faculty Building on the Purdue North Central campus. The public is invited to attend and to stay for the reception.
The 14 winners for 2014 are:
– Hannah Addie (LaPorte, 2012) studies family & developmental science and psychology at Purdue University. She lives in LaPorte.
– Zachary Biggs (Michigan City, 2014) will study finance at Indiana University. His parents are Bryan and Leslie Biggs of Michigan City.
– Stephanie Brady (Michigan City, 2014) will attend Indiana State University and study criminal justice. Her parents are Thomas and Cheri Trapana of Michigan City.
– Jeremiah Burke (New Prairie, 2013) attends the University of Indianapolis and studies sports management. His parents are Jeremiah and Eileen Burke of LaPorte.
– Martin Garcia Chavez (LaPorte, 2012) studies chemistry at Manchester University. His parents are José and Sonia Garcia of LaPorte.
– Melissa Coffeen (LaPorte, 2014) will attend Purdue University to study elementary education. Her parents are Lawrence and Angela Coffeen.
– Shelby Hertzberg (LaPorte, 2013) majors in German and French education at Indiana University. She resides in LaPorte.
– Hannah McClintock (Michigan City, 2014) will major in accounting at Purdue University. Her parents are Anthony and Jacqueline McClintock of Michigan City.
– Lucas Morse (Michigan City, 2011) studies management and business at Indiana University. His parents are John and Melissa Morse of Michigan City.
– Megan Nöe (LaPorte, 2014) will major in international business at Purdue University. Her mother is Kim Nöe of LaPorte.
– Ashley Ronvik (Michigan City, 2013) is in pre-physical therapy at the University of Indianapolis. Her parents are Todd and Debra Aldrich of LaPorte.
– Isabella Schuster (La Lumiere, 2014) will study animal science at North Carolina State University. Her parents are Matthew and Nicole Schuster of LaPorte.
– Andrew Steck (LaPorte, 2012) is a music education major at Butler University. His parents are Charles and Mary Steck of LaPorte.
– Morgan Swanson (South Central, 2014) will study engineering at Purdue University. Her parents are Shaun and Fonda Swanson of Wanatah.
About Susan Hay Hemminger
Susan Jeanne Hay was born in Indianapolis in 1958. She was raised in Michigan City, and graduated from Rogers High School in 1976. Susan graduated from the University of Michigan in 1980 and earned a law degree from Valparaiso University in 1983.
Susan was an attorney in private practice in LaPorte County from 1983 until 1990, when she was elected judge of LaPorte Superior Court No. 4. The first female judge in LaPorte County’s history, Susan served in that office until her death in September of 1993.
Judge Hemminger was a founder of LaPorte Teen Court, president of the Michigan City chapter of Tri Kappa service sorority, a board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Meals on Wheels, and was a deacon and lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Michigan City.
