The LaPorte Community School Board has chosen two finalists from a total of 18 applicants for the future superintendent of schools. They are:
– Theresa Mayerik. A former LaPortean, Mayerik has worked for the School City of Hammond for 28 years and is currently chief administrator for Academic Services and Secondary Education there.
– Mark Francesconi. Currently the associate superintendent of LaPorte Community Schools, Francesconi has worked in public school administration for 21 years, including 10 years as principal of Michigan City High School.
The public can meet and ask questions of these two candidates on Tuesday, June 10, starting at 7 p.m. at the Educational Services Center, 1921 A St.
The school corporation is seeking a new superintendent after the resignation of Rande Thorpe in January 2014. School officials subsequently learned that Thorpe faces criminal charges in two states for alleged casino gambling improprieties.
“Hiring a superintendent is one of the most important duties of a school board,” school board President Michael Kellems said in a news release. “We encourage members of the public to attend the forum, meet the candidates and provide feedback to the board.”
