Colorful dragons will invade Stone Lake in LaPorte on Saturday, Sept. 6, as powerful paddlers propel 40-foot boats to raise funds for Dunebrook, LaPorte County’s organization dedicated to eliminating child abuse/neglect and providing parent education.
The long, colorful dragon boats will take to the lake as their paddlers try to provide the synchronicity necessary to win. Led by Dragon Boat Race Co-Chairs Tim Gartland and Ted Perzanowski, the event promises to deliver fun and excitement.
“Dunebrook wanted to bring a new and different event to our community,” Gartland said in a press release. “This is Dunebrook’s 25th year, and it seemed like the perfect time to do just that.”
“We are so lucky to have beautiful lakes and beaches, and to bring families together to enjoy them fits so well with Dunebrook’s family-centered mission,” Perzanowski said.
A little about Dunebrook from its board president, Joe Coar: “As a not-for-profit organization, our programs are provided to parents and children without cost to them. To be able to do that, we have to continuously be looking for new revenues. Fundraising events, like the Dragon Boat Races and our annual gala, help us raise financial support to meet the demand for services. There is nothing more important, in our eyes, than keeping children safe from abuse and neglect.”
Dragon boat racing is an ancient Chinese sport. Each bow and stern of the long boats are decorated with a dragon head and tail. Teams consist of 16-20 paddlers who row in unison to a drummer who helps them stay in time. A steerer helps paddlers stay on their path. Teams compete in heats to earn the title of grand champion.
Food, kids’ activities and more will be available onshore. Spectators also have the chance to purchase a ticket for a 50/50 raffle whose jackpot grows with every ticket purchased.
Gartland encourages families, businesses, church groups and social organizations to form a team. “You don’t have to be physically strong; you just have to paddle in sync with your teammates.” Some teams wear themed apparel and decorate their pre-race areas. “We hope to draw experienced paddlers and racers, as well as teams who are doing this activity for the first time.”
Registration and sponsorship forms for the dragon boat races are available at www.dunebrook.org or by calling 800/897-0007. Food vendors are also being sought.
