LaPorte Community Federal Credit Union is helping to raise funds for One Good Deed LaPorte County, a not-for-profit charitable organization started by the family of the late Andrew Weber of LaPorte.
Andrew died June 4, 2013, just after finishing his junior year at LaPorte High School. His family wants to honor his memory by giving back to the community.
Two things were very important to Andy: sports and “paying it forward.” A lifelong athlete who played several sports, he was a varsity tennis player for the LaPorte Slicers at the time of his death. “Pay It Forward” was one of his favorite movies. For these reasons, One Good Deed was formed. One Good Deed’s mission is simple: Teach kindness and compassion through education and action.
One Good Deed will be sponsoring a fundraising event by partnering with another group that helps various children’s organizations — Suds for a Cause. For $35, you can purchase a 5-gallon bucket of Tide, Gain, and/or Downy (several varieties available). Visit LaPorte Community Federal Credit Union at 1304 Jefferson Ave., LaPorte, or 1315 Southwind Drive, Michigan City, between Sept. 15 and Oct. 6 to order your Suds.
One Good Deed will provide scholarships to children who want to play sports or join other extracurricular activities such as band, but whose parents cannot afford the fees and/or equipment needed. One Good Deed would also like to facilitate transportation for students who cannot join these activities due to family constraints. The other thing the organization would like to accomplish is to teach children about kindness and compassion by introducing concepts such as “pay it forward” and random acts of kindness.
Andy’s family is starting to reach out to other local organizations to partner with them to optimize One Good Deed’s effect.
