PlayThe LaPorte Service League, which will present its 82nd annual play for area schoolchildren in February, is asking for kids’ help to enhance the set for “Pirates!”

Children from the LaPorte area are invited to enter a drawing that will welcome special stuffed animals, dolls or action figures to adorn the set at the LaPorte High School Auditorium at a Feb. 1 preview performance.

“It’s positively magical what happens at night to everything and everyone when we prepare for the play. We are sure your special friend would be a big, big help,” director Nanda Danitschek said in a press release.

Interested mateys may enter the drawing at http://www.laporteserviceleague.com/playactivities and fill out the entry form online. An email will be sent to let the winners know that their special friends were chosen to participate. If your child is chosen, you are asked to bring him/her and the toy to the LPHS Auditorium on Monday, Jan. 26, between 6:30 and 8 p.m. Once there, the children and their friends will have pictures taken with one of the pirates from the play. The special figure will stay with Service League all week while members are helping with the set. Each weeknight before the play begins, pictures will be posted on the league’s website and Facebook pages so everyone can follow the adventure.

On Sunday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m., the lucky friends will be sitting in special seats to watch the community performance of “Pirates!” Afterwards, there will be free popcorn for everyone and a special treat for the winners.

In addition, before the play opens, all children are invited to color and/or decorate a picture of a fish, and these will be hung in the auditorium as part of the ocean set during the play. The coloring sheets may be picked up at the LaPorte YMCA or LaPorte County Public Library, or downloaded from the league’s website at http://www.laporteserviceleague.com/playactivities.

Colored/decorated sheets may be returned to special boxes provided at the YMCA and the library. They also may be mailed to LaPorte Service League, P.O. Box 451, LaPorte, IN 46352.

“Pirates!” will be presented Feb. 1-4 at 1 p.m. and Feb. 2-5 and 7 at 9:30 a.m. Admission is 50 cents for students and $1 for adults. The play tells the story of two brothers, their perfect sister and their nanny as they happen upon a cave rumored to be visited by pirates every 100 years. After their nanny is kidnapped by bumbling pirates, the siblings work together to save her.
