Another opportunity to clean out your garage. Twice a year, the Solid Waste District of LaPorte County has a 6-in-1 collection of several types of waste at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds, and the first one of 2015 is this Saturday, May 16.
Here are the items you can bring to the fairgrounds between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.:
— Tires: Scrap tires will be recycled into products such as mulch and asphalt. A small charge for some tires to offset the district’s costs has been instituted as follows — 4 or fewer standard car or truck tires are free. More than 4 car tires will cost $1 each. Farm tractor, semi truck and over-the-road tires are $5 each.
— Appliances: Currently, under the auspices of new IDEM laws, an appliance containing CFC cannot be “dumped” unless all freon is removed by a licensed extractor and tagged as such. After CFC removal, there is a cost associated for disposal of said item. To help offset costs, a small charge has been instituted — small appliances such as a water heater, camper/dorm refrigerator, window air conditioner, humidifier, and dehumidifier, $2 each. Large appliances such as a washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, stove, central air conditioner, $5 each.
— Household hazardous waste: Visit www.solidwastedistrict.com for more information on this free collection.
— Electronics: Although the district has two electronics recycling sites open five days a week in LaPorte County, you can still bring your electronics to the fairgrounds on Saturday for free. Acceptable materials: Computers, monitors, electric typewriters, printers, fax machines, copiers, stereos, televisions, VCRs, DVD players, telephones, laptops, cell phones, adding machines, zip drives, palm pilots, keyboards, mice, hard drives, calculators, scanners, electronic games (Playstation, Nintendo and X-Box etc.), microwaves, power supplies, battery backups, CDs, DVDs, non-PC monitors, CRT screens, plasma screens, LCD screens, computer towers, stereos, speakers, printed circuit board, small kitchen appliances, curling irons, blow dryers. (NO VCR or CASSETTE TAPES)
— Textiles: Do you have clothing, towels, bedding, shoes or other textiles that aren’t in good enough condition to donate to a local thrift store? Bring them out. The district provides a drop box for textiles in the parking lot at its LaPorte office on West Ind. 2 that can be used anytime, but you can also bring your textiles to the fairgrounds on Saturday. Old textiles can be recycled into many things, including rags and insulation!
— Documents to shred: Bring as much junk mail, old bills and other paper documents as you want for destruction at this free shredding event. Documents in any condition can be accepted, including staples.
This collection is provided by your Solid Waste District, together with all the dedicated workers and friends who make up its team effort. These people know their jobs and do them diligently.
The second 6-in-1 collection for 2015 will take place Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fairgrounds.
