The LaPorte Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) met June 9, 2015, at Olive Garden for lunch and a business session. After lunch, members gathered at Barker Mansion for a tour. Barker Hall was built in 1816 and later reconstructed in 1929.

AAUW was founded in 1881 to promote education and equity for women. It has expanded into research on education issues, pay equity, and issues involving women and girls. Each year AAUW awards grants to women for their education and programs at local levels. Last year over $4 million in grants were given nationwide.

Locally the LaPorte Branch sponsors An Evening With a First Lady, a Prominent Women of Indiana essay contest for LaPorte High School junior and senior girls, a school board candidate forum, programs of interest to the community, and a planter at Stone Lake Beach.

The next meeting will be July 14 at Carol Wollert’s. A review of the National Convention will be given. Members are asked to bring a side dish and RSVP to Carol at 324-2227.
