Jan. 12, 1917 — The Great Western Manufacturing Company in LaPorte is conceded to be the largest exclusive manufacturer of bicycles in the world. It is 10 years old and is run by three Lonn brothers. Its new office has the comfort and beauty of a mansion.
Jan. 12, 1967 — Communist Party leader Mao Tse-tung has ordered sweeping changes in the Communist army. The immediate threat of civil war seems to be dissipating.
Jan. 12, 1992 — Jeffrey Dahmer pleads guilty but insane to the mutilation slayings of 15 young males in Milwaukee County.
Jan. 12, 2007 — The LaPorte Missionary Church establishes a fund to help Liliana Ake pay her bills. Her husband Jeffrey has been missing in Iraq since April 2005.
