A LaPorte woman faces possible charges of animal abuse after she was seen repeatedly kicking a dog i the 1000 block of Maple Avenue on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013.
LaPorte Police stated in a report that at about 9:44 p.m., they were summoned to the area by witnesses who saw the woman abusing the dog. They said they could hear screaming coming from the woman’s residence and saw her throwing items around inside her home. They then saw her standing in her doorway, kicking a dog that had only three legs. The dog yelped and flew into the front yard, where the woman approached it and kicked it several more times, witnesses told police.
One witness yelled out to the woman to stop and she told him to mind his own business. She then turned her attention back to the dog and started kicking it again. Witnesses told police the suspect was kicking the dog so hard, they feared she was causing internal damage. The witnesses offered to take the dog for the woman and she continued to chase it around the yard until her sons came outside.
The woman later told police that the dog belonged to her ex-boyfriend and she was going through a tough break-up. She denied kicking the dog. Officers examined the dog, who appeared malnourished and in a state of neglect. Police took possession of the dog and it was transported to the LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter.
A review of criminal charges for abuse of a vertebrate animal has been forwarded to the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office.
