Catch a ray of summer while it’s still shining — only four more concerts remain in the 2013 season of Arts in the Park.

This week at Fox Park’s Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater, the LaPorte High School Marching Band and Color Guard will perform Wednesday and Me and the Boys will be featured Thursday.

Both free concerts begin at 7 p.m., with Patrick Watterson performing warm-up music on keyboard beginning at 6:30 p.m. both evenings. The artwork of Peg Swanson and Dave Russell will be on display, and Leigh Morris will read poetry at 6:45 Wednesday and county Poet Laureate Julie Kessler will read works at 6:45 Thursday. Concessions will be available both nights.

The impressive LPHS band consists of 90 members who will perform several popular songs as well as their 2013 competition program that includes the music of American composer Richard Danielpour, Chicago-born composer Joseph Schwantner, and John Mackey, whose compositions are classical with an emphasis on wind.

The band, under the direction of Mickey Stisher, was a 1991, 2004, 2005 and 2007 state finalist and has consistently received Gold Division ratings at both the Indiana State School Music Association District and regional marching contests. It has won awards for best music, marching, general effect, and color guard at various contests in the Midwest. Assistant directors are Charles Steck (LaPorte City Band director), Matt Sullivan and Megan Sullivan.
