A 16-year-old is charged with attempted murder, among other things, and his father also faces multiple charges after a night that reportedly included a dispute over a drug deal and the shooting of a 17-year-old on Aug. 22, 2013.
Jeremy Diederich, 16, of the 9500 West block of County Road 125 South, is charged as an adult with attempted murder, a Class A felony; aggravated battery, a Class B felony; criminal recklessness, a Class
C felony; and dealing marijuana, a Class D felony. He was being held without bond in LaPorte County Jail, according to a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office press release.
His father, David Diederich, 58, of the same address, is charged with possession of a firearm by a violent felon, a Class B felony; dangerous control of a child, a Class C felony; and aiding, inducing and causing dealing marijuana, a Class D felony. His bond was set at $25,000 at the jail.
On Aug. 22, county deputies were called to a parking lot at Purdue North Central in Westville, where they found a 17-year-old male who had been shot in the hip. He and three friends, also juveniles, had fled from the 125 South residence to the PNC lot after the shooting.
Police said a reported disagreement over a drug deal had occurred at the Diederich home and that led to shots being fired at the car in which the juveniles were traveling. One shot penetrated the car door and struck the 17-year-old in the hip. He was transported to Saint Anthony Memorial Hospital in Michigan City; the wound was believed to be non-life-threatening.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is seeking assistance from the public in locating a vehicle that was involved in a crash near the scene of the shooting. Right after the shooting, the juveniles’ vehicle collided with a dark-colored pickup truck, police said. Anyone with information is asked to contact lead investigator Sergeant Andrew Hynek at (219) 326-7700, Ext. 2401.
Also responding to the scene were the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team, LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service, Indiana State Police and Michigan City Police.
