Jan. 14, 1914 – The modern world’s greatest disaster, with probably 100,000 persons burned or drowned to death from lava and tidal wave, is the story today from Nagasaki, Japan.

Jan. 14, 1964 – The U.S. says it will fulfill its obligations to defend the Panama Canal, but hopes to do it on a “good neighbor” basis with the Republic of Panama.

Jan. 14, 1989 – An armed robber lying in wait behind a restaurant at 213 Pine Lake Ave. makes off with under $100 from an employee leaving the restaurant.

Jan. 14, 2004 – Former LaPorte County Commissioner Michael Quinn announces his intention to seek the Democratic nomination for county auditor.
