Michigan City attorney Michael Bergerson has announced his candidacy for judge of LaPorte County Superior Court 1. He filed formal paperwork with the state on Jan. 15, 2014.

The primary election is May 6, 2014, and the general election is Nov. 4, 2014.

Highlighting his 30 years of trial experience in both the criminal and civil courts throughout the state, Bergerson noted in a press release his readiness for the job. Bergerson, senior deputy prosecutor in Indiana’s 32nd Judicial District, said, “I have the experience uniquely suited to lead this court. As the lead prosecutor for the state in the hundreds of cases that I have been assigned, I have prosecuted such serious felonies as homicides, sexual assaults, serious assaults, arson, drug trafficking, and drug offenses. I have vigorously sought and obtained homicide convictions and have consistently pursued enhanced punishment for habitual offenders.”

He noted successful prosecutions of Marzono Shelly (for murder) and Mario Castillo (for aggravated battery and criminal confinement) as recent examples of his success as a prosecutor in dealing with dangerous criminals.

Bergerson has maintained a private law practice for 35 years and has a long record of involvement in community groups and activities, the release states. “Management of a private law practice and service on numerous boards and commissions will be tremendous assets to me in the effective administration of this court,” he said in his release, adding that he will emphasize his vision for strengthening the court. That vision includes a thorough, problem-solving approach; improvement of the currently lacking efficiency and diversity of the court’s administration; strong working relationships with court personnel and law enforcement agencies; and taking seriously the responsibility to render well-reasoned, impartial, just and fair rulings without exception.

Bergerson is a lifelong resident of Michigan City and a graduate of Marquette High School. He and his wife, Debra, have seven children, all of whom have college degrees.

Bergerson’s legal career reflects a devotion to serving the community, including contributing pro bono services to organizations such as Catholic Family Services, Young People’s Little Theatre and Little Lighthouse Landing. He is a board member of A Hand Up, which provides legal housing assistance to homeless female veterans. He has also been active with a number of area schools. He received a bachelor of science degree at John Carroll University and his Juris Doctor from Northern Illinois University.
